Home Energy and Energy Efficiency Consultation

  • 2-3 hours in your home
  • Evaluation of your energy usage

  • Site analysis for renewable energy resources (sun, wind, water, etc.)
  • Brief follow-up report and system quotes as appropriate

I act as an independent consultant, drawing on my years of using renewable energy (35+ years off-grid with solar- and wind-electricity, solar hot water, wood heat, etc.), writing and editing, coordinating and teaching workshops, as well as study and consultation with my extensive contacts in our industry. My goal is to help you approach energy efficiency and using renewable energy in a sensible, pragmatic way that achieves your goals. I know that I can save you thousands of dollars by sharing what I’ve learned over the past three decades and applying it to your situation.

In addition to consulting, I also do sales for a number of regional renewable energy installation companies. If you decide that you want a renewable energy system, I choose an appropriate company or companies for you, considering the best match for location, type of job, and personality, among other things. I gather pricing and make sure it’s reasonable. And I consult with the installation company about the design, keeping tabs on the quality of design and installation. I am paid a commission by the chosen companies, who quote your job at their standard pricing. So for no additional cost to you, you get me as part of your team.

With homes in the design phase, I prefer to get involved in the process as early as possible — this gives the greatest chance of a high-performance home. See the Nichol article below on a project that I was a part of from nearly the start. I’m quite proud of the results, and the happy client. When I’m part of the design team, I charge my hourly fee, and add only a tiny cost to the total home package, but a high value in long-term energy savings.

“We hired Ian as a consultant to look at our property and give us an idea of how we could install a micro-hydro power generation system. He was very helpful in educating us on the options, and laying out the pros and cons of each.  He cheerfully splashed around in our creek in the middle of winter to help us take some flow measurements, and gave us some solid recommendations on how to proceed from here. We are very happy with his advice and expertise, and are excited about moving forward with our project.  Ian’s input is helping us as we go through the planning stages and will be instrumental in making good, well-informed decisions that will result in the system that works best for us.”
